Whatevers II - Family time

En español, un poco más abajo...

Good morning dear readers, and happy new year!

I'm still stuffed with all the eating in the family gatherings. I'm not recovered yet. And you?

This year, we celebrated Christmas and the new year's eve at my aunt Mary and uncle Angus' house, in the countryside.

They are a special couple. Uncle Angus is the brother of my father and they are totally different, like the day and the night. My father is strict, right, serious.., he teached us with military discipline (and we are 5 siblings). His brother, however, is a crackpot. the black sheep of the family, according to my father. He married aunt Mary in a hurry. It was a shotgun wedding!, go figure.... it was the "local scandal of the year". but here they are, in love after almost 30 years, enjoying their life together.

- Hey, aunt Mary, let me help you with the laundry.
- Ok, darling. give me the clothes and I will hang them up, so I do not have to bend down. My bones are starting creaking.
- What are we eating this evening, aunty?
- What?? Turkey!! What else? There's always turkey on Christmas Eve. It is already in the stove, from this early morning. Your uncle has made the stuffing and also the compote is ready.
- Uncle Angus made the stuffing?? I can't believe it!
- You know him. He is as stubborn as a mule. And he wanted to make the stuffing.. Let's see.

- Hey, familyyyyy!!! leave the laundry and come to help me with the coal. The turkey needs more heat
- ok. we're coming... we're coming... Go, and take a wheel barrow to carry the coal. Don't take the coal with your hands!

- Ready, steady.... go!! All aboard!!!

My aunt almost end on the ground. Uncle Agnus took the wheel barrow and he pushed it towards my aunt's legs, so she fell into it, like a sack

- Are you stupid?!!! You almost made me fall. Look, everyone can see my underskirt!! How embarrassing!! -she said, laughing

I couldn't stop laughing. The situation was so absurd that it needs to be inmortalized with the camera. I went for it.  When I came back from the house, aunt Mary and uncle Angus was already posing for the shot.

- Say cheese!!!

And you, how did you start the new year?

As always, tell us your story so we can publish it in a next issue of Modern Voices.

Buenos días queridos lectores, y ¡feliz año nuevo!

Uff estoy relleno de tanta comilona, aun no me he recuperado de tanto exceso y tanta celebración. ¿Y vosotros?

The Whatevers – is a creative story telling project founded by Cat ScanlonVicki Chrisman and Nathalie Kalbach in 2012. This year, also  Martha Richardson and me joined the team.

Have you ever been to a flea market and then had this weird sensation of those faces from long ago times looking at you? Sometimes you find a little trace of the history on those photos, the name and city of the photographer, a scribbled note or year on the back of the photo…but that is it. There is no more ….Really…no more? They are forgotten as long as they have no name and no story…

Here is how it works
  • Vicki, Cat, Nat, Martha and I have made a one-year commitment to each other and picked twelve photos with Whatevers whom we will give a story.
  • Every month – if possible always on the 15th –  each of us will do a post with an individual story that goes along for us with the same photo.
  • If you want you can play along and we will have the photo for you to download and show us your version of The Whatevers. The photo will be posted at the end of our blogposts- not on Facebook!
  • There is no rules to the story itself- it can be funny, sad, uplifting, breathtaking- WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the length or the form of the story- it can be a short sentence, an essay, a poem or a soap opera – WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the artform you choose – it can be a scrapbook layout, an altered art project, an artjournal page – WHATEVER
  • Here is a rule though: if you take the photo you have to link back to us and show us your story.
  • These pictures are from our personal stash and are for personal use for you only! If you want to use them for a publication whether a book or magazine in print or digital form please ask for permission!
  • If you want to participate we’ll have a linky list for each Whatever Post.
  • You can also join our The Whatevers -Facebook Page
